For 47 years I have supported Newcastle United...I've known it good, very good...I've known it raw and painful. I have had my spirit lifted, and my heart broken, by this wonderful, maddening, transcendent football club. As a fanbase we've been manipulated and lied to many times before. Previous owners have fleeced us, previous managers have let us down...players have been disappointing...results have been embarrassing, but through it all the fanbase has remained UNITED. Beset at every turn we have, consistently fronted up; stood tall, walked far and fought hard for our club. Let me say that again...OUR CLUB!! And, make no mistake, it is OUR CLUB...we have fought for it, bled for it and are willing to die for it.
Today we are caught in an unprecedented situation, our owner is at war with both us and the club manager. He is now no longer bothering to cover up his ruthless asset stripping of our, once proud, club. He promised Rafael Benitez (a manager who has never broken a promise in his life) freedom, investment and backing...remember "every penny generated by the club"? He has delivered on, precisely, NONE of those promises. Rafa is hanging in there for our sakes, we are a fanbase he totally understands and has grown to love...but a man can only stand so much. This is why the Geordie Nation is massing like never before. We are standing shoulder to shoulder with our beleaguered manger, and also our players (betrayed once again over promised bonuses), to battle the greatest menace our club has ever faced. A cancer eating away at it's heart in the form of one man. A man who has consistently lied to us (proven in court by Kevin Keegan) taken us for fools and poisoned the very soul of OUR CLUB. Mike Ashley...a name I curse, a name I wish I had never heard.
He lords over his tainted empire like some bloated despot of old. He bemoans being portrayed as a "pantomime villain" and yet, his every action confirms that that is exactly what he is. The difference being, he's playing pantomime with peoples lives here. We are mobilised now, the establishing of "Sports Redirect" (a site that mimics Ashleys company logo but redirects users to every sports shop BUT his) is a masterstroke. Local sports outlet, Start Fitness, is providing access to Newcastle United shirts without having to crawl to Ashley. I would still advocate no direct action during the game, inside the stadium, but at any other time...I'm in favour of it.
In the end we will win...I'm certain of it, because we are united in our cause. We will battle with all the gifts we have...with heart, with faith and with steel we will defend our birthright...he is only one man whereas...WE ARE A CITY!!!
